The game engine wasn't the original Wolf3d engine but Apogee Software added new things to it such as floor and ceiling texture mapping, touchplates, animated textures, elevators and even dynamic lighting (sort of). The game is very dark -- some of the darkest areas are displayed as completely black, even when turning up the brightness and tweaking the lighting and shadow settings in all sorts of configurations. Meanwhile, if you increase the brightness, some areas are too bright.
